Italian Renaissance Bambocci Walnut Commode
Highly carved walnut figure head drawer handles on burr walnut drawers, mounted on two short and three long drawers with highly carved borders, each stile carved with roaring masks above typical Bambocci figures.  The top  with carved front and sides, the panelled ends of the chest are further carved, the whole set upon a carved ogee plinth, stands on bun feet.
Northern Italy, Genoa or Florence, circa 1600

These Renaissance carved Bambocci figures celebrate life and nature and were designs favoured in both Florence and Genoa into the 17th century.

Literature: Similar examples of this commode, or chest, were illustrated in a catalogue including the collection of the 'Vincigliata Palace' in Florence.  'Italian Furniture and Interiors' by George Layland Hunter, London, Batsford, plates 153 & 164.

Condition: The carved figures are all well preserved with the rich colour showing through, the burr walnut drawer fronts with a rich hue, some signs of small alterations over 400 years but on the whole very original, the drawers, which are of slab construction are lined with hand made decorated pink paper, the drawers all open smoothly, the feet front and back are later.
