John Duncan Fergusson was one of the four Scottish Colourists, born in Edinburgh where he studied at the Edinburgh School of art before moving to Paris. The colourists enlivened the Scottish art scene, all inspired in France by the Impressionists, exploring light, shade and atmospheric effects through painting en plain air.
