Georgian mahogany cellarette wine cooler
Of square design with a flat top and moulded edge, all sides with reeded decoration, a pair of brass carrying handles, stands on fluted tapering legs and brass castors.  The lid opens to the original lead liner and 9 divisions.
English, circa 1790

Will contain a 30cm bottle with the lid closed.

Following the 18th century tradition of British drinkers the cellarette was designed to store wine in the dining room where it was required, this one is of low proportions so that it could be placed out of the way under a sideboard.  This model will hold 9 bottles and unusually is complete with its original lead liner used both to make divisions for the bottles but also to contain ice when chilling wine, the lead liner has a plug and hole to the base to drain off the melted ice water after use.

Condition: The well figured mahogany is of very good colour, the condition is very good, the top has 3 short cracks to the left side, two at the front and one at the back, these have been repaired and are quite sound.  The lead liner is in lovely condition and complete with drain plug.  The lock is complete with one key.  The brass handles and castors are original.
