William Stewart MacGeorge a Galloway artist who born in our local town of Castle Douglas. He was inspired by the landscape of his birth and throughout his life he depicted it in many views and portraits. This seascape 'Sea Pinks' is typical of the Solway coast in summer, the coastline of SW Scotland which looks south towards England and the Lake District on the other side of the Solway.

MacGeorge studied in Edinburgh with fellow Galloway boys Edward Atkinson Hornel (1864-1933) and Thomas Bromley Blacklock (1863-1903), he and Hornel went on to study in Antwerp before returning home when he married and continued to work between Edinburgh and Kirkcudbright, he regularly exhibited at the RSA throughout his career.
