A fascinating hardstone sewing reel by Adam & Co’s Royal Museum in Matlock. The body of the reel is onyx with one circular end inlayed with 8 sections each of a different hardstone native to the Peak District. The other end of the reel carries the seal of Adam and Co, The Royal Museum of Matlock. 4cm high, 3.3cm diameter (the circular ends).

 

Mr Adam took over Mr Mawes Museum in Matlock in the 1830s. The museum located on what is now Museum Parade sold all manner of pieces all made from the local minerals abundant to the area and claimed The Duke of Devonshire as a major patron.

 

Condition: In excellent condition.
